    • About

The sculpture corresponds to the artist period 2017-2019 named La Compañia (The Company)

in the 1880's The Company was the largest paper mill  in America and the biggest employer in Mexico. By the mid 1950's the project was abandonned leaving surrounding nature and buildings merge into new forms and meanings.

Enters the artist Daniel Lesama,  who is the most interesting and talented contempoary itFor the exhibition the artist puts on stage his imaginary company in ruins that tried to tame the mythical woman in the form of a mountain.

Lezama, based in Cuernavaca since 2019, bases his imagination on his childhood experiences when he made arduous climbing routes to Iztaccíhuatl (The Sleeping Woman), between the ages of seven and 12 with his father, through the wooded valleys of a region marked and sculpted in the rock by the Compañía de Papel San Rafael. These experiences recovered from his memories have taken a central role in his work.

According to Erik Castillo, in Lezama's recent painting there is an unprecedented twist: never before has the artist focused so much on his personal history. However, his latest work is not exactly "autobiographical." What is noticed, in any case, is “a complex elaboration of remote personal memories and crucial experiences that occurred a short time ago. Lezama maintains in recent paintings something of his narrative characteristic about the Mexican, however fully subsumed in his own individuality; the difference is that now the images are allegorical stagings of the Mexican in more affirmative, less literal and, also, more critical terms "
